Society of Housing Leaders (SoHL)

Join a vibrant group of dedicated leaders in making a lasting impact on Eau Claire

Who We Are

SoHL is a leadership-based housing organization composed of UWEC students dedicated to the growth and development of student leaders within our campus community

Our Values

Leadership   -   Recognition   -   Service   -   Inclusion   -   Scholarship

These core values are what drive our programming efforts as an organization.

What We Do

  • Leadership Opportunities

SoHL, in partnership with the Residence Hall Association, puts on the Fall Leadership Retreat each year. For the low price of $0.00, residents in our halls can attend a weekend of leadership-based activities out at a nearby nature reserve.

In the spring semester, SoHL partners with the AIL office to put on the “Know Your Strengths” program;  Another free program where participants take the Clifton Strengths test and talk through their results in a guided discussion with leaders from our partners in the Activities Involvement & Leadership (AIL) office.

  • Service Projects

As an organization, we strive to leave a lasting impact on campus and in the surrounding community through the various service projects we put on throughout the year.

Some of the projects we do include, but are not limited to, blanket making for Project Linus, Tree planting with the Department of Natural Resources, card making for Love For Our Elders, food packets through Feed My Starving Children, making care kits for local Eau Claire shelters serving community members who are unhoused, up-cycling old t-shirts into dog toys for the humane society, and distributing care packages to students whose parents purchase them through our partners at SwakU.

  • Recognition Efforts

SoHL also puts a significant amount of energy into recognizing the many groups of housing employees, organizations, and campus partners who work in and with housing to make living on campus the experience that it is!

SoHL designates certain weeks as recognition weeks for the various employee, organizational, and partner groups that serve our campus community and comes up with creative ways to recognize and thank them!  As an example, for Hall Council Recognition, we put on a Hall Council Bingo event where the councils in attendance are recognized for the work they do and get to try their hand at winning “programs in a basket” to use in their halls by playing through Bingo.

SoHL is also responsible for selecting the winners of the Housing Spotlight Awards which highlight individuals and organizations who stood out as extraordinary that year.

Membership Benefits

While SoHL is open to the public for anyone to attend, becoming a member comes with numerous benefits!  SoHL members gain access to apply for a member scholarship that can help take a bite out of their education expenses (we have a non-member scholarship too by the way…). And to thank our members for the work they do, their attendance and participation in the events and projects we do passively earns them points towards our cumulative SoHL merchandise program where members walk away with fun SoHL swag!  Members are also eligible to run for any open executive board positions we have throughout their time with our organization (President and our Vice Presidents of Service, Recognition, Outreach, Administration, Conferences, and Finance), giving them access to additional leadership opportunity within the organization.  Lastly, members are also eligible to vote on the various constitutional and budgetary legislation put forth throughout the academic year, allowing them to have a more direct voice in how the organization runs and operates.
