Gioachino Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (Little Solemn Mass), composed in 1863. Despite its unique characteristics, it remains a popular and beloved piece in the choral repertoire. Featuring a chamber ensemble of soloists, chorus, two pianos, and harmonium, Rossini infused the mass with his characteristic melodic and harmonic style. He included elements that evoke his comic operas, leading him to jokingly refer to it as "the last of my sins of old age".
Symphonic Choir specializes in the study and performance of extended works composed for choir with instrumental accompaniment. The group is composed of students, faculty, and staff from many scholastic disciplines within the University as well as singers from the greater Chippewa Valley and Eau Claire community. The ensemble is proud to present choral masterworks annually. Join us for an afternoon of choral excellence. Two major concerts are presented each year alongside a variety of collaborating ensembles, including the University Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, the Wind Ensemble, and many others. Recent performances include Corigliano’s “Fern Hill,” Carol Barnett's "World Beloved: a Bluegrass Mass," Handel's "Messiah," J.S. Bach's "Magnificat," Mozart's "Requiem," Mendelssohn's "Elijah," Rutter's "Gloria," and "Dona Nobis Pacem" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The tradition of continued singing is the mantra of Symphonic Choir. Singing is a lifelong activity, and the members of Symphonic Choir show that anyone can sing for a lifetime and are encouraged to.
